The Vicat Needle Apparatus works on the principle of measuring the resistance offered by a cement paste to the penetration of a standard needle under a specified load.
A cement paste of standard consistency is prepared and filled in the Vicat mould. The plunger or needle is then allowed to penetrate the paste under its own weight.
The depth of penetration is measured at regular intervals to determine the initial and final setting time of cement as per standard test procedures.
