The Ring & Ball Apparatus works on the principle of determining the temperature at which a bituminous sample softens enough to allow a steel ball to fall through it.
A bitumen sample is placed in a brass ring and a standard steel ball is placed on top. The assembly is heated at a controlled rate in a water or glycerin bath.
The temperature at which the softened bitumen along with the ball touches the bottom plate is recorded as the softening point of the sample.
