The Sand Pouring Cylinder works on the principle of the sand replacement method for determining the in-situ dry density of soils.
A small hole is excavated in the soil and the excavated soil is carefully collected and weighed. The hole is then filled with standardised sand using the pouring cylinder.
The volume of the hole is determined from the weight of the sand filling it, and the in-situ dry density of the soil is calculated from the weight of the excavated soil and the volume of the hole.
