The Liquid Limit Device works on the principle of the Casagrande method. A soil sample mixed with water is placed in the brass cup and a groove is cut through the center using the grooving tool.
The cup is then dropped repeatedly from a fixed height by operating the crank handle. The number of blows required to close the groove over a standard length is recorded.
The moisture content corresponding to 25 blows gives the liquid limit of the soil sample as per standard test procedures.
